Hamilton police investigate a rash of thefts from local fitness gyms

Angela Morelli first saw surveillance footage after tracking her stolen credit cards to a big bear convenience store on Fennell.

The woman is wearing her stolen sweater. Morelli had more than usual in her purse when she went to the Goodlife on Upper Wentworth last Thursday. She now feels the woman watched her go into the gym and then cut the lock on her locker when she was in fitness class.

Her cards were used by someone minutes after Morelli arrived at Goodlife. Then she learned the same thing happened to someone else three days earlier.

Mammen wasn’t carrying valuables but her car was stolen and her husband’s computer and wallet were in the car. The credit and debit cards were used to buy hundreds of dollars worth of cigarettes and lottery tickets.

Mammen was told the thief was banned and wouldn’t be back Morelli was told she was using a stolen pass. Both women feel Goodlife could have done more to protect members especially after the first incident.

Mammen’s car has since been found but Morelli and her husband had to pay the deductibles on their house and car insurance. Goodlife now has staff closely monitoring the front door and they’re telling every member that goes in, keep your valuables with you, a locker is not secure enough.

Goodlife fitness says it’s assisting Hamilton police with their investigation and have posted additional signage at the location. The Hamilton police mountain detachment would like to hear from anyone with further information or surveillance footage.
