Farmers in the Hamilton area are trying to stay afloat as long spells of dry heat affect their crops.
A regional Heat Alert is slated to end this evening, but besides earlier in the week, there’s been numerous days without a drop of rain this summer.
In times like these, farmers do whatever can be done to earn their dollars.
According to data from Environment Canada, besides heavy rainfall this week there’s been 15 days this month with little to no rain in the Hamilton area followed by the back end of June of mostly dry days.
Agriculture Canada’s Drought Monitor, which assesses drought severity in the country, is showing “abnormally dry” conditions in southern Ontario this month, in the thick of it is Hamilton and surrounding areas, where a lack of rain and high heat threatens crops like soybeans and corn and in turn farmers incomes.
