A Hamilton courtroom was filled with emotion today as victim impact statements were read during the sentencing hearing for a 22-year-old man found guilty of killing his younger cousin.

The court heard powerful statements from Mark Bistoyong’s mother and brothers.

Mark Bistoyong’s friends and family attended the hearing to honour the 16-year-old, who was fatally stabbed by his cousin, Lawrence Bistoyong, at a family party in July 2023.

Mark’s mother, Merl Bistoyong, was the first to speak.

“The loss of a child is unbearable. He was a source of strength to his brothers and myself. He was a bright light who filled our life with so much joy. A piece of my heart has been ripped out,” she said.

Lawrence Bistoyong has been found guilty of second-degree murder for stabbing and killing her son.

The incident occurred in July 2023 when 16-year-old Mark Bistoyong was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife by his cousin Lawrence at a family party.

The altercation followed a basketball game at a nearby park that escalated into aggression.

Mark’s brothers also shared their victim impact statements.

“My younger brother had his whole life to live. I think about the family he could have had and the university he could have gotten into. I will never be the same person again. The heart and soul of our family is missing,” Luke Bistoyong said.

Mark’s younger brother, Adam said, “I could talk to him about anything. He even taught me how to shave. Life would be a lot better if Mark was here. He was a role model for me.”

Altogether, more than 200 victim impact statements were submitted to the court.

Lawrence Bistoyong will be sentenced on Jan. 10, 2025.
