Hamilton council seeks input on plan for Main St. to see two-way traffic

Hamilton councillors are seeking public feedback on a proposal to convert Main St. from one-way to two-way traffic after consultation and construction periods.

The city’s current plan adds two-way traffic between King St. East and Longwood Rd. South.

It also adds protected bike lanes to much of the strip and other pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, like increased sidewalks or shoulders as buffer zones between cars and pedestrians.

Council made the decision to convert the busy road last year, after a record-breaking year of pedestrian deaths.

Some changes have already been made, including adding “no right turn on red” signs and more speed cameras.

According to the city, the construction of the project will begin in 2024.

The city is hosting a feedback session with Hamiltonians at 6 p.m. next Thursday.
