Halton school board orders dress code after teacher’s controversial attire
Halton District School Board (HDSB) trustees passed a motion last week ordering the director of education to create and implement a dress code for staff by March.
The “professionalism policy” will outline the board’s expectations of all staff members, such as requiring them to dress appropriately in the classroom.
“The HDSB’s commitment to human rights remains rooted in our core values and commitment to each and every student and staff who identifies as a member of an underserved and underrepresented group,” said Curtis Ennis, director of education at HDSB.
An interim report is expected in February before being presented by March 1.
It follows controversy over the attire of a transgender educator at Oakville Trafalgar High School wearing large, prosthetic breasts in the classroom. The shop teacher garnered international attention after photos and videos of them were shared online. It also sparked a protest outside of the school and multiple bomb threats towards it.

Last December, parents threatened legal action against HDSB if a staff dress code was not implemented.
A lawyer told CHCH News that he was contacted by three parents who are upset about the attire of the shop teacher.
Rishi Bandhu, the lawyer for the parent group, said his clients want the school board to ensure staff follow a dress policy as well.
“I think the concern relates to the inappropriateness on the face of this attire,” Bandhu said.
HDSB previously decided to not intervene in how the teacher presents themselves in class, citing protection under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
