Halton police are warning the public about a recent spike in auto-thefts in Burlington.

Officers say the department has seen 20 vehicle thefts or attempted thefts in the past week, saying Toyota is the brand they’ve seen targeted most frequently.

Authorities are offering a few tips for the public to protect their vehicles, saying the most effective is installing an after-market GPS tracker. Other tips include:

  • Add an OBD port blocker/protector
  • Parking in a locked garage when possible
  • Block vehicles with a second (lower-value) car
  • Use a steering wheel lock
  • Consider installing a kill switch
