A man shot during a flea market robbery in St. Catharines is in hospital with serious injuries.
Police arrested one man and are hunting for another after two men armed with a gun smashed a glass jewelry display case at the flea market on Turner Crescent about 3:30 yesterday afternoon.
A group of shoppers challenged the gunman getting him to the ground and getting the gun away from him.
During the struggle one man was shot and another suffered minor injuries.
CHCH spoke with the owner of the flea markett, Scott Sweitzer, who was there at the time of the shooting, who described the scene;
“I heard glass breaking I ran out to the isle way to see what was happening.
I was with a customer and left him in the office and ran out to see what was going on.
At that point I had had customers screaming and shouting there is a man with a gun.
I was in complete shock.
I have been working the flea market for 8 years.
Our family has owned the flea market for 25 years I have never seen an incident like this in my life.”
There were about 200 people inside the market, including children.
Sweitzer says he is now going to install cameras and increase security.
The suspect who fled from the scene, is described as being in his mid 20’s with a medium build, tanned skin and was wearing a grey hoodie, bandana and sunglasses.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
