The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the newest film from auteur director Wes Anderson. Taking place at the luxurious hotel in the fictional country of Zubrowka, the story revolves around the hotel’s concierge, M. Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes) and his lobby boy protégé Zero. When the wealthy hotel resident Madame D. (Tilda Swinton) suddenly dies, it is revealed that Gustave is the recipient of her large fortune. This makes him the main suspect in a murder investigation and the target of a large manhunt. With his trusty lobby boy by his side, Gustave races to clear his name before her jilted son (Adrian Brody) and the police track him down.
Anderson is known for creating detailed settings for his films, but Zubrowka and The Grand Budapest Hotel may be the most impressive worlds he’s ever invented. As producer Jeremy Dawson explains, “He has created an entirely fictional part of Eastern Europe known as The Republic of Zubrowka, and in Zubrowka we find one of those great spa towns that cropped up all over before the turn of the century.” The area’s fully fleshed out history saw a fascist takeover happen in the thirties followed by a Communist period. (You can learn all about it at the interactive Akademie Zubrowka.)
The Grand Budapest Hotel is rated 14A.
