Going to Hamilton’s Supercrawl? Here’s what you need to know

The largest street event of the summer returns to Hamilton this weekend when Supercrawl kicks off.

The free festival slated for Sept. 8 to 10 will see much of James Street North crowded with dance, fashion, local food and vendors, musical performances, visual arts and more.

Here is what you can expect at Supercrawl this year:

Transit

Local transit will be running from the Hamilton Street Railway’s MacNab Transit terminal just one block west of the event, with service running throughout the city.

Burlington Transit’s Route 1 makes stops in downtown Hamilton and offers connections to the Burlington and Appleby GO Station.

GO Trains run every hour from Union Station to the West Harbour GO Station located at the festival’s north end.

Parking

Parking will be available at the City of Hamilton’s York Boulevard Parkade off of Vine Street. The daytime rate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. is $12, while the evening rate from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Sunday rate is set at $8.

The Parkade also contains an electric vehicle charging station.

Street Closures

Major closures include James Street North from King Street to Wilson Street/York Boulevard, Wilson Street/York Boulevard to Cannon Street, Cannon to Barton streets, Barton to Strachan streets and York Boulevard/Wilson Street will be closed from Park to Hughson streets.

Additional closure will take place on King William, Rebecca, Vine, Mulberry, Colborne and Murray streets.

All roads will re-open Monday at 5 a.m.

Food

Thirty food vendors will be there for foodies to explore. With everything from dumplings, jerk BBQ, perogies, poutine, cheesecake, donuts and more, you’ll want to make sure you can try as much as you can.

Musical Performances

Supercrawl has become a beloved showcase of local musical talent as the Hamilton music scene continues to flourish. Here are the artists you can expect to see:

BADBADNOTGOOD, Broken Social Scene, Rita Chiarelli & Sweet Loretta, The Flatliners, Hamilton Superstars, Raine Maida & Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah Beatty, Born In The Eighties, Boy Golden, The East Pointers, Goodnight Sunrise, Hamilton Children’s Choir, The HiCats, Lacey Hill, HPO with LTtheMonk, King Park, Pierre Kwenders, Ryan Langdon, Mikhail Laxton, Mattie Leon, Luella, MVLL CRIMES, New Friends, Mimi O’Bonsawin, Keegan Powell, Revive The Rose, Shad, Smoothie Lou, Sunshine Makers, Adrian Sutherland, Texas King, VILIVANT, Suzie Vinnick, and Roslyn Witter.

In partnership with Centre[3] and AndThenYou, Supercrawl will also be co-presenting Syncopations, a celebration of Hamilton‐based electronic musicians, DJs, noisemakers, synth heads, and algoravers.

Art Performances

Supercrawl will host a residency from globally-acclaimed performance art troupe Corpus Dance Projects, whose Dora Award-nominated production La bulle (featuring a one-storey bubble tent and its inhabitant, the iconic dreamer Pierrot) will be showcased in hour-long performances at dusk over the festival weekend.

This year’s Supercrawl will also feature a vibrant and compelling spectrum of visual and public art installations from David Brooks, Nathan E. Carson, Hamilton Perambulatory Unit, Katie Huckson & Alicia Hunt, Ness Lee, Maria Legault, Jessica J. Rodríguez, Kimber Sider, Stephanie Springgay, Stylo Starr, and TH&B.

Fashion Showcases

Local and Canadian brands will be at the event to showcase a variety of brands on all three days.

Included will be the return of the Sapphyre Poison Drag Extravaganza, Ark Collective – which features BIPOC-owned businesses, size-inclusive menswear Amici brand, sariKNOTsari, and the beloved True Hamiltonian, among others.

Family Zone

Interactive play for kids will be running at the Family Zone that can be found on York Boulevard between MacNab and James streets. There will be more than two dozen community groups there to provide creative activities for kids, including a Pirate Life Theatre and Play Project Parkour.

Author’s Tent

Local authors will dive into the power of storytelling with a line-up of readings and chats.
