Frank is a dark comedy from Irish director Lenny Abrahamson. The film tells the story of a young, not very talented musician named Jon who is desperate to join a band. His wish comes true when he comes across an odd pop band called The Soronprfbs that ask him to join them for a show play a little bit, an offer he gladly accepts. The band is led by a mysterious man named Frank that is constantly wearing a large, paper-mache head. Soon enough Jon finds himself travelling with the band and helping to record an album, with the ultimate goal of playing the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. The film stars Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy, and Michael Fassbender as the fake head wearing lead singer.

You wouldn’t think a big star like Fassbender would want to do an entire film with his face hidden, but the fake head acts as a mask and can allow the actor to really perform without any inhibitions. Fassbender was also particularly drawn to the script’s humour. “It was so funny, I was laughing out loud. I didn’t know where it was going to go from scene to scene, it had me intrigued. It was a very original piece with moments of real poignancy within the comedy.”

Frank is rated 14A.
