Fort Erie Peace Bridge closed to trucks
The brutal blast of winter has so much of Southern Ontario in an icy grip. While the weather is dangerously cold almost everywhere, a storm in Fort Erie and a blizzard warning in the Buffalo area is where the conditions are considered the worst right now. In fact, all U.S. bound truck traffic at the Peace Bridge has been shut down and a major highway south of the border is also closed. Areas near the border are being hit by extreme temperatures and extreme winds leading to officials asking everyone to stay home.
A massive wreck. Treacherous conditions cause a pileup in the Toronto bound lanes of the QEW at Netherby Road in Fort Erie. That side of the highway was closed for more than an hour as emergency crews scramble to clean up. T people were sent to hospital with undisclosed injuries. Two transport trucks were also involved on this, the second day of near zero visibility on the roads. Elsewhere, Highway 3 was closed from Gasline to the 140 Highway in Port Colborne. Police urging drivers to stay off the roads. Those who do are focred to drive to the conditions, with the four ways flashing. Along the Niagara Parkway in Fort Erie, blowing snow makes visibility almost impossible. Cars sliding into the ditch, despite most cars only going 5 and 10 kilometers an hour. At the Peace Bridge, commercial vehicles have been stopped entirely. The 190 in New York has been closed and trucks cannot cross into the States. Many will be forced to find accommodations in town, until this blows over. Along the Niagara River, ice has built up to the point where some areas may jam, causing some flooding on the Robert Moses Parkway and LaSalle Expressway. Hopes are that it will clear, but a flash flood advisory for parts of Erie County remain in effect.
