Former vice-principal is sentenced to house arrest for voyeurism

House arrest was the sentence handed to a former Brantford teacher today. Brent Hachborn pleaded guilty to nine counts of voyeurism in March, admitting he kept a video camera in a school washroom for a year so he could secretly record his male colleagues for sexual pleasure.

Brent Hachborn had it all, Justice Robert Gee began. A wife, two young kids, a six figure salary, he was so well liked as a teacher he’d been promoted to vice principal. However there was a side to Mr. Hachborn that he kept hidden, the judge said.

It was hidden for about a year until a James Hillier school staff member heard beeping in the washroom and followed the sound to an alarm clock-shaped camera hidden in the ceiling. Hachborn himself was on the video, installing the device. Police eventually found three cameras used by Hachborn, which he would alternate for a fresh charge and data card. Hachborn would watch the videos alone at night.

The victims told court last week they thought Hachborn was a friend and they no longer trust their own judgement. They thought he was stopping by mornings to bring coffee and chat after he was promoted and went to another school. The truth was devastating and many swept their own homes for hidden cameras.

The crown had been asking for jail time but the judge sided with defence. Brent Hachborn  gets 8 months house arrest, followed by 8 months conditional sentence, then two years probation.
