Canadian Foreign Affairs department believes more than 2,000 Canadians are in the direct path of Hurricane Patricia.

Patricia is expected to hit Mexico’s west coast this evening, and it’s heading towards the resort cities of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. A state of emergency has been declared for the area with winds expected to top 300 kilometres an hour.

People are bracing for the monster category five hurricane, which is the strongest hurricane on record, already looking much more powerful than Hurricane Katrina and many others.

Dozens of municipalities in the region have declared a state of emergency.

The only other time a Category 5 hurricane has been recorded making landfall on the west coast of Mexico was in October 1959, when at least 1,800 people died.
