Five years later, probe begins into Ashley Smith death
It sounds unbelievable: a mentally disturbed teenager chokes herself to death in front of prison guards, who do nothing but videotape her death.
Ashley Smith was 19-years old when she died nearing the end of nearly two years of incarceration, and only a month away from parole. She choked to death after tying a piece of cloth around her neck in a cell at the Grand Valley Institute for Women in Kitchener. Five years later, an official inquest began in Toronto today to try to determine why. Scot Urquhart reports.
