The City of Niagara Falls is preparing to provide a temporary home for almost two thousand people from Ontario’s north.

They’re expected in the falls, after being forced to evacuate their remote First Nations community.

About 2300 people live in the First Nations community of Kashechewan on James Bay and now most of them are heading for Niagara Falls as officials try to sort out the latest water and sewer problems in their community.

About 1700 are being moved temporarily to the falls, where the hotel rooms are available.

The band says their community’s drinking water became contaminated with sewage through a failure in it’s aging water infrastructure.

They declared a state of emergency and asked the military for help but say they’ve been turned down and people are left waiting to leave.
