A Foodland in Chippawa, Ont. has shut down after a section of the roof caught fire late Monday night.
Crews from Niagara were quickly able to contain the fire at the grocery store on 8251 Dock St. at around 9:45 p.m.
Fire Chief Jo Zambito tells CHCH News the blaze originated near where roofers were working with torches earlier in the day. It caused damage to the rear roof structure and widespread smoke and water damage throughout the store.
Zambito says the fire isn’t considered suspicious and the length of the store closure is still unknown as Foodland corporate representatives have taken over the repairs and cleanup.
“The pharmacy and the adjacent tenant have reopened, as power has been restored and those units did not sustain any damage,” he says.
“Costs are estimated to exceed $2 million, encompassing fire‑related damage to the roof structure, as well as smoke and water damage throughout the store. This estimate also includes cleanup operations, food disposal, and other associated costs.”
