Far From the Madding Crowd is a historical drama starring Academy Award nominated actress Carey Mulligan and Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts. The film also boasts a strong supporting cast with Juno Temple, Michael Sheen, and Tom Sturridge on the roster. Celebrated Danish director Thomas Vinterberg returns to the directing chair after the success of his last feature in 2012, The Hunt.
Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
Having written several of his films, Vinterberg says it was refreshing to adapt a screenplay this time around. “I felt the relief of not having written it myself; of knowing I was doing a Thomas Hardy film, not a Thomas Vinterberg film. So I guess I allowed myself a moment of just being a director. I thought I deserved that.”
