Facts about Hamilton’s new meat plant
Neighbours may not be happy about the location of the plant – but people looking for work in Hamilton will be.
The meat processing facility will create 670 permanent jobs that pay between $15 to 23 an hour plus benefits.
It’ll produce hot dogs and deli meats — but animals will not be slaughtered there.
The new plant will replace a handful of smaller facilities across the country.
More than 15-hundred jobs will be lost, the majority in Kitchener. Those employees won’t immediately be transferred — they’ll have to apply for jobs. However Maple Leaf VP Rick Young says the 200 employees from the Hamilton plant will get first dibs.
“Those employees have transfer rights and they have the first right to transfer into this new facility so 230, the balance to that 670 will be a combination encouraging existing Maple Leaf Employees to apply and there are no other transfer rights.”
There will be even more temporary jobs created when construction starts in early 2012.
