Extreme cold weather warnings for much of Ontario

Environment Canada says the vast majority of Ontario is under prolonged extreme cold warnings, with wind chill values hovering around -40 degrees in many areas.
The weather agency has issued extreme cold warnings for areas around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay stretching to the north.
Communities around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will see cold weather continue into Wednesday, where areas on the shore of Lake Superior are expected to see frigid temperatures cease on Tuesday.
The weather agency has also issued a snow squall warning watch for Northern Huron County and surrounding areas, which is expected to bring 30 to 60 centimetres of snow until Wednesday.
The districts of Hamilton, Halton and Brantford have all issued cold weather alerts for their regions. These come into effect when weather conditions are at or below -15 degrees or minus -20 with the wind chill.
The public is advised of the risk of windburn frostbite and hypothermia. Vulnerable populations include children, older adults, those experiencing homelessness and people who work outdoors.
A spokesperson for Hamilton EMS said: ” It can be relatively easy for someone to develop hypothermia or frostbite during cold extremely low temperatures, and increased wind chill, especially if they are not properly dressed, are exposed to the elements for prolonged periods, or if certain risk factors are present.”
So far in 2025 Hamilton EMS has received six calls related to frostbite or hypothermia.
Those heading or working outside are reminded to dress in layers as unprotected skin can freeze in less than 30 minutes. Change clothing if it gets damp as wet material can accelerate heat loss.
Protect your face, ears and hands to avoid frostbite. Drink warm fluids and avoid strenuous exercise. It is also recommended to check on older relatives and neighbours and to keep pets indoors.
Many communities will have recreation centres and libraries available as warming centres during regular operating hours.
The extreme cold temps are expected to last until Wednesday, with a slight warm up after that.
