It’s time to bundle up as we enter the “dead of winter”.

That is the warning from Environment Canada Tuesday, adding that everyone in Southern Ontario should prepare for a longer stretch of extreme cold conditions.

After experiencing a string of snow squalls and icy conditions, Environment Canada says it’s time to start taking precautions for a longer stretch of colder temperatures, levels they say could be “deadly”.

Environment Canada’s David Phillips says that is what’s being forecasted over the next few weeks.

Despite next week not reflecting the forecast, he says it’s anticipated that Southern Ontario will see some fresh Arctic air come in.

This is where people in our regions should take precautions at home and when going outside, due to high risks of frost bite and hypothermia.

Local health officials are urging everyone to stay updated on potential cold alerts and health warnings.  They say when skin is exposed, frost bite and hypothermia can develop within minutes.

Doctor Marc Jeschke of Hamilton Health Sciences says that anyone experiencing these symptoms should go to the hospital to seek care.

Jeschke says during these chilly and windy conditions be sure to stay dry, wear appropriate winter gear and be sure to effectively protect your hands, feet, face, neck and head.
