McMaster University is boosting the salaries of all female faculty. The raises follow a study by the University that found a gap between men and women’s wages.
The 2 year study found a difference of about $3500 on average between men and women’s salaries. A discrepancy that could only be explained by gender. So as of July 1st the University will be giving 340 female faculty members a raise. Female faculty members at McMaster University are getting a pay raise of $3,515 after the study found male professors on average are making 2% more.
Salary increases are based on productivity so women who take time off to have children are often at a disadvantage.
Charlotte yates is the Dean of Social Sciences and says she’s “pleasantly surprised.” The last time they looked at the pay gap between men and women at the University was 15 years ago. Pay rates will be reviewed now on a regular basis so that any gender differences that reoccur can be corrected.
This isn’t unique to McMaster, other universities have done similar studies, The University of BC did one 2 years ago and had similar results.
