Enemy is an erotic thriller based on Jose Saramago’s novel The Double. Enemy stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Adam, an introverted history teacher who discovers a film extra that looks exactly like him – the charismatic and confident Anthony, also played by Gyllenhaal. Adam tracks Anthony down, and once the two meet, their lives twist together in all sorts of ways.

Enemy marks the second collaboration between French Canadian director Denis Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal. The pair worked together on 2013’s Prisoners and, judging by their history so far, they really like psychological thrillers. Instead of making the differences between Gyllenhaal’s characters physical, it is their personalities that set them apart. As Gyllenhaal explains in the film’s production notes, “There’s the world in which one character has a beard and the other one doesn’t and one talks with a funny accent and the other one doesn’t. That would have been an incredibly vain way of going about it and I think, in a way, that’s exactly what this movie isn’t about.”

Enemy is rated 14A.
