Elliot Lake inquiry

The inquiry into the fatal mall collapse in Elliot Lake heard Thursday from an executive of the company that supplied the roof’s concrete slab decking.

Doug Harman of Core-Slab Structures says salts are damaging to concrete, but his company makes no recommendations about waterproofing its product. He says waterproofing is the responsibility of the architect or engineering team. Investigators believe water and salt penetration rusted out a critical weld on the underlying support structure of the mall’s roof. Two women died when the roof-top garage of the Algo Centre Mall caved in last June.
