Downtown Hamilton YMCA begins fire restoration

While restoration work has just started on the 3rd floor of the YMCA, where the fire broke out, all 43 men who once called that floor home have found new accommodations.

Some are living at the YMCA, others are in long-term care homes and city housing.

Genevieve Hladysh, Vice President of Hamilton YMCA, said, “The team worked so hard and cared so much for the residents that called this place a home. We believe everyone deserves a dignified place to call home.”

Restoration is expected to take a few months to complete. So that means the men’s shelter will have vacant space to fill.

The YMCA says they’re not sure what the newly renovated 3rd floor will be used for.

Because of the fire, the YMCA says the community has really come to gather with donations, but like any other charity, they can always use more.
