Doug Ford refuses to stock LCBO with U.S. alcohol until Trump drops tariffs

Premier Doug Ford says he will not be putting American alcohol back on the shelves of LCBO stores, regardless of what U.S. President Donald Trump says or posts on social media.

The premier’s comments follow after Trump made a social media post Monday regarding preventing the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge connecting Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich.

In that post, the president complained about U.S. liquor being removed from Ontario shelves and repeated misleading allegations about Canada’s dairy sector and its limited tariff deal with Beijing on agriculture products and electric vehicles.

The LCBO pulled American-made alcohol off shelves in March of last year, shortly after Trump imposed tariffs on Canada.

Ford says people in Ontario have adjusted by purchasing Canadian made products instead.

He said if Trump wants American products back on the shelves he must drop the tariffs on Canada.

“Yeah, well it’s obviously working, its an irritant, but there’s one thing President Trump can do: get rid of Canadian tariffs — all it does is it’s a tax on the American people, an attack on the American economy — get rid of it and we’re good to go,” said Ford. “The good news is our wineries, especially in Niagara, that’s seen a jump of close to 70 per cent, because people are now tasting great Ontario-made wine.”
