Disability issues at Tim Hortons Field

Hamilton Ticat fans have plenty to cheer about when it comes to what they’re seeing on the field this year, after Sunday’s win the team is still undefeated at Tim Hortons Field but not everyone is having a good time cheering the tabbies on. Some fans, particularly those who are physically disabled, are having a tough time warming up to the new stadium.

Craig McPherson lost his leg after a car crash, life hasn’t been the same since. So when Craig and his wife won 2 tickets to the Tiger-Cats home opener, what was supposed to be a fun outing, became a night full of painful reminders of his physical limitations.

Tim Horton’s Field has lots of accessible seats but if they’re not sold 48 hours before kickoff, the Ticats sell some of them to able-bodied patrons. By the time Craig and his wife were looking for spots, they were too late and were given tickets to the lower bowl. “I couldn’t see the screen so basically just sitting in the stadium staring at people’s backs.”

The stadium has fixed some problems concerning ramps and their wheelchair accessible washrooms, but changes to the stadium’s all-grey stairs, which could be dangerous to the visually impaired, could take some time.
