Defence: Firgan-Hewie’s killer ‘snapped’
The jury heard closing arguments today in the murder trial of a Mississauga teen who was allegedly killed by her two friends in December 2008.
The defence argues that one of the accused, Rafal Lasota was drunk, stoned and that he “snapped”, attacking and stabbing Aleksandra Firgan-Hewie, 13, in December 2008, killing the young girl in his bedroom.
The defence told the jury they could only convict the 28 year old Lasota of manslaughter, not first degree murder, cause the attack was not planned or deliberate. The crown argues the contrary, saying the young girl was “as good as dead” as soon as she walked into Lasota’s room.
Aleksandra Firgan-Hewie was stabbed 37 times, her body left in garbage back in Lasota’s backyard. The crown told the jury, “you don’t accidentally stab a girl 37 times.” “Rafal Lasota intended to kill this girl, or cause her bodily harm, which was likely for her death to occur.”
The co-accused is 22 year old Michelle Liard, Lasota’s ex-girlfriend. Both have pleaded not guilty to a charge of first degree murder. The crown has asked the jury that they find the two accused guilty of that charge, saying they acted together.
The judge will finish his charge to the jury tomorrow.
