Damaged cable at West Harbour GO Station causes fatal electrocution of dog

An investigation is underway after a dog was found fatally electrocuted at the West Harbour GO Station on Nov. 30.

Hamilton police say at around 7:54 a.m., a dog was fatally electrocuted after it stepped onto a sewer grate near the station on James Street.

Metrolinx says a damaged electric cable was in contact with a metal hand well cover, which had electrocuted the dog.

Police confirm that the wire had come loose from the surrounding cement and made contact with the grate, causing it to become energized.

They say the wire normally supplies power to streetlights on the GO station property.

Investigators say there is no evidence of tampering or criminal activity.

In a statement to CHCH News, Metrolinx says a full investigation is underway to understand how the electric cable came to be damaged in the first place.

The electrical company Alectra Utilities disabled the power source and says there is no further risk to the public, and no other areas affected by this.

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at GO West Harbour on Nov. 30, and extend our sympathies to the owner on the loss of their pet,” reads a statement from Metrolinx Media Relations.
