Contentious U.S. election campaign ends with election day

It’s election day in the U.S.

It is not certain that we will find out tonight whether President Donald Trump will receive a second term or if he’ll be replaced by Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Nearly 100 million Americans have already cast their ballots as voters took advantage of absentee balloting and early in-person voting.

The counting of those ballots will likely take another day or two.

To win, a candidate needs at least 270 electoral college votes.
