Construction worker trapped under concrete slab

A 64-year old construction worker is in critical but stable condition after a dramatic rescue in Flamborough. A massive concrete slab from a dam he was working on broke off and fell onto him, pinning him on the rocky ground below.

The normally calm neighbourhood in Carlise just north of Clappison’s Corner suddenly erupted in activity as dozens of emergency crews rushed to save a man who had his legs crushed by the concrete. Fire fighters failed to free the man from the slab using traditional tactics, “Our airbags can lift a car so if our airbags couldn’t lift it it gives you an idea of how heavy it was.”

A crane was called in to lift the massive concrete piece and the army of first responders worked together over two hours to set the man free.

“We had four ambulances here, three more first responder units, three more paramedics, the air ambulance had two more paramedics, fire had half a dozen trucks, 35-40 fire fighters and half a dozen police officers.”

On top of the numerous emergency crews here, two surgeons from Hamilton General Hospital were brought here just in case they had to amputate the patient’s legs, luckily that didn’t have to happen. Around one o’clock the man was air lifted to Hamilton General hospital where he remains in critical condition. The crews were working on a dam that’s located on private property, the Ministry of Labour is looking into the incident.
