The union representing postal workers says Canada Post’s plan to end door-to-door delivery on Hamilton mountain has been put on “indefinite hold.”
But Canada Post is dismissing that claim, and says that the plan to install community mailboxes is proceeding. “We have been talking to our employees throughout the process the direction has not changed. As soon as those boxes are installed we will mail out the keys and get ready for conversion” says Canada Post Spokeman Jon Hamilton.
And those mailboxes are continuing to be installed regardless of push back from the city and Canadian Union of Postal Workers. And the union says until it hears a firm date of when the switch will happen they consider the plan on hold. “This past monday the zone manager had a work floor meeting with the affected depot and announced to them that the June 15th date was now on hold and there was no new date for the implementation for the new structure” says CUPW Hamilton President Terry Langley.
Canada Post says the process to switch from door to door mail to the super mailboxes is still set to happen sometime this summer on Hamilton mountain. They are just waiting to send out the keys until every single box has been installed.
Canada Post and the City of Hamilton will be back in court tomorrow battling over the installation of super mailboxes. The city has filed a restraining order to stop Canada Post from installing the mailboxes
