Hamilton City Council approved new procurement policies that prioritize buying goods and services from Canadian companies with a strong focus on local suppliers.
Preference will be given to Canadian steel and aluminum in Hamilton infrastructure projects.
Council increased the dollar thresholds to $133,800 for goods and/or services, and $334,000 for construction for requesting quotes from bidders to buy local more easily.
“Supporting Canadian business isn’t just good policy, it is essential for our economic resilience,” said Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath. “We must invest in our local suppliers, protect our jobs, keep our steel town community strong and keep taxpayer dollars in Hamilton to ensure lasting economic benefits for the people who live and work here.”
Hamilton City Manager Marnie Cluckie adds the new policies will keep taxpayer dollars working close to home.
“We are proud to invest in our local economy and help keep our well-earned dollars right here in Hamilton and Canada,” said Cluckie.
City staff will transition to these new changes over the coming months, with the procurement team working with city departments to focus on Canadian and local businesses.
