Changes to Ontario’s Blue Box Program spark air quality concerns

Some of the changes to Ontario’s Blue Box Program are raising air quality concerns.
The new regulations would require the producers of recyclables to cover the full cost of running the program. Previously, the producers and municipalities would split the cost in half.
Air quality concerns have sparked about another part of the program that would change. Companies would be permitted to count incinerated materials for as much as 15% of their recycling targets.
Critics are concerned that this will reduce the air quality of the province as more materials will be burnt which could produce harmful emissions.
The changes to the project is intended to make recycling easier and more cost effective for communities.
The full transition to the new framework is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
