Caroline Mulroney, the Toronto lawyer and daughter of former prime minister Brian Mulroney, has confirmed she is entering the race to become the next leader of Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party.
Mulroney says she believes she can unite the party following the resignations of former PC leader Patrick Brown amid sexual assault allegations.
She confirmed the news Sunday afternoon at a hockey arena in north Toronto. According to The Canadian Press, the 43-year-old mother of four took questions from reporters between watching her two boys play on their Triple A teams.
“After 15 years of Liberal government we need a fresh change,” she said. “People are tired. They want a new government. They want something new. So, I decided to put my name forward.”
While she has never held elected office, Mulroney says she can lead the Conservatives to victory on June 7.
Christine Elliott and Doug Ford are also in the leadership contest. Elliott is a former MPP and ran in the last PC leadership race. Ford is a former Toronto councillor and the brother of the late Rob Ford.
Candidates have until Feb. 16 to register. The party will decide its new leader on March 10th.
