U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a hard copy of the U.S.-Iran agreement Wednesday night, saying it achieves everything the U.S. set out to accomplish.
Meanwhile, on the heels of the G7 summit in France this week, Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is ready to help implement that U.S.-Iran deal if it’s appropriate.
“It has exceeded my expectations,” Carney said. “We’re very pleased with the deal that’s been struck.”
Carney told CNN last night that he is pleased with the deal between the United States and Iran to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“It sets the groundwork to ensure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon,” Carney said. “It sets the groundwork for a reintegration over time of the economies in the region. It sets the groundwork for a solution in Lebanon which we discussed today. So it’s positive. Of course, it has to be followed through.”
Carney also said Canada will help where it can, specifically on the financial side, including aiding with unfreezing Iranian assets that were tied to the war.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the deal a success.
“On Sunday we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish, everything and much more,” Trump said. “Ending the current conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon. That’s what it was all about.”

The 14-point agreement reportedly includes a 60-day ceasefire and toll-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz while the final details of the peace deal are negotiated. The United States has agreed to remove its naval blockade from the strait within 30 days.
The deal also declares the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and Iran commits to not procuring or developing nuclear weapons.
Today, ships could be seen in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed for several months, causing the largest oil supply chain disruption in history and sending gas prices skyrocketing locally.
Trump also said today that a deal was reached to avoid a worldwide economic depression.
This month’s G7 summit comes to a close with no bilateral meeting between Trump and Carney, with the prime minister telling reporters not to read into it.
“I had seven or eight discussions with President Trump over the course of the last 36 hours,” Carney said.
Trump earlier Wednesday evening warned that attacks against Iran will restart if they don’t hold to this agreement.
