Prime Minister Mark Carney has named retired Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour as Canada’s next governor general.

She has previously acted as chief prosecutor at The Hague and as UN human rights commissioner. The highly regarded former jurist is also fluent in both official languages.

Arbour will replace Mary Simon, who became Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General after being assigned the role by Justin Trudeau in 2021.

Simon is set to mark her tenure in July as Governors general tend to hold office for five years.

Carney promised he would name a governor general who is fluent in both official languages after Simon’s appointment faced controversy as she is fluent in English and Inuktitut.
