Canadian crime severity and overall crime rate fell in 2025: StatCan

Statistics Canada reported on Wednesday that the crime severity index fell five per cent in 2025, marking a second consecutive year of decline as both violent and non-violent crime decreased.

StatCan says the crime severity index dropped five per cent last year.

The agency says the overall crime rate also dropped two per cent. This indicates the severity of offences declined faster than the overall volume of crime.

Breaking and entering and auto theft both posted significant declines, while shoplifting increased for a fifth straight year.

Hate crimes and fraud also decreased. But notably, Canada’s homicide rate fell 16 per cent.

This marks the largest year-over-year drop in nearly four decades, bringing the rate to its lowest point since 2014.

Most provinces and territories recorded lower crime rates, with the exceptions of New Brunswick and Nunavut.

StatCan says most of their crime metrics are represented as a share of population. Last year, the crime rate stood at 5,585 incidents per 100,000 people.
