Canada’s Finance Minister Bill Morneau is leaving federal politics.
Morneau announced Monday that he is stepping away from the finance portfolio and stepping down as a member of parliament.
Morneau faced calls to quit after revealing he forgot to repay more than $41,000 in expenses to the “WE charity.”
He spoke in Ottawa after having met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss reported disagreements over pandemic spending plans.
It’s unclear who will replace Morneau, who has served as Canada’s Finance Minister since 2015.
Morneau said he never intended to run in more than two elections.
He will submit his name for the next secretary-general for the organization for economic co-operation and development.
