The Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls is closed for a few weeks so that critical maintenance can be completed.
Niagara Parks says in a statement that the conservatory will be closed from Jan. 5 to Feb. 13 — ensuring the conservatory will be open for the Family Day weekend.
This is mainly so that staff can replace the netting enclosure which divides non-native butterflies and moth-species from the rest of the surrounding habitat.
Niagara Parks says this netting needs to be replaced every eight years.
Other maintenance being completed includes the pruning of trees and shrubs, replanting of tropical beds, updated navigation, retail store updates and preparations for a new interactive exhibit in the auditorium.
For holders of a Wonder Pass, Niagara Parks says that admission for the butterfly conservatory can be substituted with admission to the Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse, which is basically next door on the Niagara Parkway.
