More than a month after an epic storm flooded 3100 basements in Burlington a temporary donation centre has been opened to help the most needy residents recover.

Donations are already coming in by the truckload.

Mini Wahidi, Burlington’s citizen of the year organized the initiative for those caught in the recovery bind.

“Some people weren’t covered for the type of flood. Another lady, her deductible is $5000 and she couldn’t pay it.”

The centre is collecting clothing, linens, toys and other household supplies. They also intend to keep a log of furniture that is available.

Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring says about 500 of the the 3100 flood-hit families are in desperate need. He says funds collected through the city and province will only cover the basics and is floored by the outpouring of generosity.

“Last night I’m out canvassing and i ran into a couple with young kids, and the 8 year old was having a birthday party today and she’s asked her friends to bring donations.”

The centre is just for material donations for the next 30 days. The Burlington Community Foundation is also halfway to their fundraising goal of $2 million dollars.

Under disaster relief guidelines the province can fund up to double what is raised in the community.
