Officials in Fort Erie are assessing the damage from one and possibly two tornadoes that touched down on Monday afternoon.

The suspected twister or twisters left behind a line of damaged trees and buildings through the area around Fort Erie.

The damage is extensive with reports of damaged roofs, windows, buildings and trees knocked down.

The RONA store in Fort Erie had its roof lifted off and landed in a neighbouring backyard.

CHCH News spoke with a resident who witnessed some of the destruction, “…It was wind like I’ve never seen before, and we get a lot of storms.” She went on to say, “I turned around and… and literally the RONA roof was up in the air, trusses and all, just like Wizard of Oz. And it was so loud, it’s a metal roof, so it was super loud. I don’t know if I was in the tornado. Like I don’t know if I was in a tornado or what.”

A tornado also touched down in Buffalo Monday as well.

There are no reports of injuries in either city. Environment Canada investigators will be in Fort Erie today to say for sure if what so many saw it was a tornado and to assess the damage.
