Brock University students discover thousands of artifacts during archaeological dig

Thousands of artifacts that are over 100 years old were discovered during an archaeological dig in Niagara by a team at Brock University.

Community members got a chance to see the artifacts and the dig site today by Twelve Mile Creek.

Team member Benjamin Riopelle says being a part of this project has been a unique experience, “you get a really human look at what the everyday lives were for someone living in the 1800s at a shipyard.”

Glass bottles, parts of toys, and other architectural materials were also among the artifacts found at the site that was once the Shickluna Shipyard. The team is continuing the work they started in 2019, excavating two operation sites.

The team discovered more than 4,000 artifacts in 2019 and they’re on track to recover more than twice that amount this year.
