Bridge in St. Catharines facing lane reduction after deemed unsafe

A bridge in St. Catharines is being reduced to one lane because it has been deemed unsafe to handle more than one lane of traffic at a time.
The lane reduction is happening to the St. Paul Street West bridge located between Pelham Rd. and Louth St.

Originally constructed in 1922, St. Paul St. West is a smaller CN Rail bridge and has undergone extensive inspection and evaluation.
Reducing the bridge to one lane will allow Niagara Region to keep it open while lessening the negative impacts of heavy vehicle loads.
A complete bridge replacement is scheduled for Spring 2023 and will address the aging infrastructure and improve the vertical alignment of the roadway approach.
A temporary traffic signal will be placed on both the east and west sides of the bridge to allow for a smooth transition to a single lane of traffic on the bridge.
Load restrictions will be put in place as well and, with the exception of emergency vehicles, trucks must use the posted detour route.
The single lane status of the bridge will remain in effect until construction for a replacement bridge begins in Spring 2023.
