Police investigate ‘unknown substance’ in child’s Halloween candy

Police are warning residents to check their children’s Halloween treats after a Brantford family found a box of candy containing an unknown substance.

Investigators say the family was inspecting their child’s candy after trick-or-treating in a west Brant neighbourhood on Oct. 31 and found an opened box.

“The package was a DOTS Assorted Fruit Flavored Gumdrops minibox which was supposed to contain fruit flavored gumdrops,” said Brantford police in a news release. “The candy had been replaced with three small unknown white cube shaped items and the lid was pushed back together but was not fully resealed or glued.”

Police say the unidentified cubes may be camphor, a substance that can be unsafe if taken orally.

Camphor can cause serious health problems, including seizures, if they are accidentally swallowed by children.

They believe the child collected candy from homes near Blackburn Dr., Conklin Rd., Shellard Lane., and St. Patricks Dr.
