Brantford emergency homeless shelter set to reopen after Sept. fire
An emergency homelessness shelter in Brantford is set to reopen Monday after a kitchen fire in September displaced many of its residents.
A fire broke out at the Rosewood House on Nelson Street Sept. 17, which forced about 40 residents to temporarily stay at motels throughout Brant County until repairs completed.
Executive Director Tim Philp says the accidental fire started on the stove and spread through the kitchen.
“We had an accidental fire, just finished dinner, lights were turned off, doors locked – within 30 seconds a fire started at the stove,” Philp told CHCH News.
“Within two minutes, [it] consumed the kitchen.”
The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damages.
Repairs began immediately following the fire to clean and repaint the space but the kitchen still remains out of commission.
The Salvation Army has been providing meals for the residents who live there and say they will continue to do so.
