Brandon Montour to bring Stanley Cup home to Six Nations next week
The Stanley Cup is coming to the Six Nations of the Grand River next week.
Brandon Montour, who won the cup with the Florida Panthers last month, is bringing it home on July 24.
“We are very proud of Brandon and his accomplishments,” Chief Sherri-Lyn Hill said in a statement.
“We’re glad Brandon is sharing his day with Six Nations.”
The fourth annual Henrique Montour Golf Classic was held at the Monthill Golf and Country Club outside Caledonia on Friday, and this year, one of the hosts was a Stanley Cup champion.
Last month, Brandon Montour of the Florida Panthers hoisted the cup into the air as the world watched the finale of the 2024 Stanley Cup Championship.
The 30-year-old hails from the rural Six Nations of the Grand River community of Ohsweken — and next week, the cup will join him in his hometown.
“Sounds pretty cool for sure,” Montour said. “Exciting times for my family and me. Sharing this with everyone next week is going to be exciting.
Soon after, he’ll be heading to Seattle. The star defenceman recently signed what he called a “life-changing” seven-year, $50 million contract with the Krakens.
“We’re excited to head up to Seattle,” he said. “Family is excited to check things out. I will miss the organization and friends, we’ll always stay in touch have that history and experience.”
The entire playoff was certainly a memorable one, but it’s also a moment he’ll get to hold over a longtime friend of his — Burford local, Adam Henrique, who he faced on the ice, playing for the Edmonton Oilers.
“Well.. tough, it was certainly hard,” Henrique said of the loss. “You get too close as your lifelong dream and it gets taken away from you. It’s something that will be with you forever.”
Henrique recently signed on with the oilers for another two-year, $6 million contract with the team and says he is excited to be back with the Oilers for the next couple of years.
“It’s a veteran team. A team that’s been through a lot and come up short. The hunger will be there from day one next season and I’m happy to go back and have another opportunity at it.”
But on Friday, the rivalry was set aside and the two professional hockey players for their annual golf tournament, raising money for local youth organizations.
Next Wednesday, Montour will be return with the Stanley Cup to Six Nations for a parade and a party that will be held at the Six Nations Sports and Culture Memorial arena, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
A parade starting at Ohsweken Speedway will bring the cup to the arena.
Before and during the event, roads will be closed from 5th Line to the intersection of 4th Line and Chiefswood Road, and to Lawrence Jonathan Lane. One lane will be open for emergency services.
