A 41-year-old man is facing a slew of charges after firefighters found homemade bombs in his home while battling a fire in Welland last month. Niagara regional police also allege he is responsible for the blaze, which caused about $200 000 in damages.

Jason Grant was given bail this afternoon. The court heard the Welland man had struggled with mental health issues over the last 10 years and had tried to take his own life numerous times but his latest attempted put neighbours and emergency crews at risk.

On October 16th firefighters were called to a two-storey house on Park street when they came across several bombs. Grant had allegedly placed four bombs throughout the house made up of aerosol cans, propane tanks and ammunition. Firefighters found Grant lying in the front yard of his house after he jumped out the second storey window. Neighbouring homes were evacuated and bomb technicians were called in. Police say if the bombs went off the house would have been levelled and neighbouring homes would have been damaged.

His charges include arson, possession of explosives and intent to cause an explosion. For most the hearing Grant sat back in his chair with his arms crossed. He would periodically shake his head in disagreement. The judge said the allegations against Grant are extremely disturbing and while he would be released it would be under strict conditions. He must live with his surety, his ex wife and is only allowed to travel to medical appointments. Grant had been in hospital for over two weeks after the fire getting medical treatment. He is set to appear in a Welland courthouse on December 2nd.
