Today in Kitchener, a jury heard from a man who once called Robert Badgerow his best friend. In the early 1980s, Eugene Kelly worked next to Robert Badgerow at the Dofasco hot mill on Ottawa street north and later they became friends, golfing together, vacationing with their families. Robert Badgerow was named godfather to Kelly’s youngest daughter and Kelly was the best man at Badgerow’s second wedding.

In 1981, Diane Werendowicz was found dead in a stream off Lake avenue and Queenston road just behind her Jerome crescent apartment building. Court heard today that Badgerow lived in the neighbouring building and Kelly lived in Werendowicz’ building. Kelly told court he and Badgerow worked near gate Six at Dofasco in 1981 and the phone booth would have been about 30 seconds away.

In 1998 Kelly knew police wanted Dofasco employees to hear a 911 call made from that phone booth two days after Werendowicz was found dead, 17 years earlier. The call was full of information only the killer could know. Kelly didn’t listen to the recording until two days after Badgerow was arrested. Badgerow’s lawyer suggested there was nothing particular in the voice that was recognizable, but Kelly disagreed.

“I know Bob. I know Bob’s voice. When you speak to someone you know as well as I know Bob, you know it’s them on the phone.”

The jury is back for more evidence tomorrow.
