Attempted ATM heist

Hamilton police are looking for the driver of a pickup that smashed into a Dundas convenience store Tuesday morning.

The stolen pickup truck backed up and smashed right through the variety store, the latest in a string of attempted ATM thefts. This is the second time in two months that someone did this to the same convenience store on Governors road in Dundas.

Police are still investigating several similar thefts, including one we told you about in February, when three people stole an SUV and drove into a Upper James restaurant. In all three of these cases there have been no arrests. Police say they’re taking the investigations seriously, but it’s a slow process.

“It is something that is very time consuming; being able to go, again, back to video, it’s important for us to have that video because it leads us to a lot of good evidence.”

Police say having surveillance cameras helps them make arrests sooner, but only if they’re working; advising store owners check them weekly. Also for those that have ATM machines, police say to placed them in the back away from windows.
