At least 68 people are dead and 58 are receiving medical treatment including two Canadians after a Wednesday morning crash between two trains in central Spain.
“At least two Canadians were hurt in this tragedy,” Carney told reporters in Ottawa. “Our thoughts are with their families, the victims and their loved ones, in the days and weeks ahead.”
In the province of Toledo, a high-speed train slammed into another train that stopped in central Spain, derailing two cars.
This crash comes nine months after an accident between high-speed trains belonging to the same operators on the same line that killed 46 people.
Around 100 Madrid emergency personnel are responding to the crash.
The accident involved trains from Spain’s state-owned RENFE and the private company IRYO.
